Yellow-black cabbies call off strike after CM’s assurance

After standing firm for five consecutive days with their demand to scrap the app-based taxi service GoaMiles, the yellow and black taxi operators on Wednesday finally called off their strike. The strike was withdrawn by the operators after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured to ‘protect’ their interests.
“I am extremely happy to announce that the yellow-and-black taxis will start plying on the road from tomorrow as they have called off their strike,” said Sawant in the state assembly minutes after a meeting with the prominent operators of yellow and black taxi operators in the assembly complex at Porvorim. He appealed to All Goa Tourist Taxi Owners Association to also withdraw the strike in their interest and also in the interest of the state.
Sawant said that the government will place a moratorium on registration/enrolment of new vehicles under rent-a-bike and rent-a-cab scheme of the state government for the next three years.  “Around 50 per cent of the fatal accidents in the state involve tourists as they are opting for rented bikes instead of taxis and often get confused on the road as they are not familiar with Goa,” he said.
