Congress questions government’s decision to allow casino at proposed Mopa airport

Congress on Wednesday questioned Dr Pramod Sawant-led government’s decision to allow casino at proposed Greenfield International Airport at Mopa, the first phase of which would be commissioned in 2021.
Speaking to media persons, Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat pointed out that the State Gambling Act does not allow casinos to be located at the Airport.
“Goa Gambling Act defines where casinos can be located in the state. Till today, there is nothing in the Act that allows casinos to be set up at the airport,” Kamat, the former Chief Minister said.
“I don’t know how government signed with the concessioner that casinos would be allowed at the airport. That is the fundamental question,” he said.
In the information tabled in the House, the Chief Minister said the Mopa airport will have casino besides hotels and other facilities in it. He also said that only the air passengers would be allowed to enter the casino at the airport.
Kamat said he would be raising this question during the Demands for Grants on Home Department and would seek an explanation from the Chief Minister.
"I would like to know whether government has amended the Gambling Act and if so when," he said.
round 232 acres of land at the airport had been earmarked for commercial development.
