Porvorim farmers defend MLA

Porvorim farmers’ clubs have defended their local MLA Rohan Khaunte against the allegations of illegally constructing roads in open fields. The farmers have stated that the roads have been constructed by Water Resources Department upon their demands. Addressing the media in the capital, members of various farmers’ clubs from the Porvorim constituency said the allegations made by Porvorim Block Congress Committee and others are to gain political mileage against the MLA.
Kishore Sawant of the Sai Farmers Club in Socorro claimed that as many as 9 farmers clubs wanted the roads to be constructed as it was getting difficult for the farmers to move their goods and equipment. “There was not a single road to get access to our fields with machinery. We were unable to take tractors, harvesters, etc. So the farmers approached our MLA Rohan Khaunte and requested him provide us with roads so that the machinery that we get can be taken to the fields with ease. He forwarded our request to the WRD and they constructed the road for us”, he stated.
He said the farmers had given the NOC to the WRD to construct the road through their fields. He informed that there are more than 500 farmers who are benefitting from the roads that have been constructed through the fields.  Accusing the PBCC of politicking the issue for personal and political benefits, Sawant claimed that none of those who addressed the media and made allegations are local farmers.
“Wilbur Ticlo, who made the allegations, is using the same road to bring the machinery in his fields. Three days back since his machine got stuck in the field, he brought a JCB to pull it out and in the event, he damaged the road. Now, we are finding it difficult to walk through to the fields, especially our women folk have to walk in knee deep water to get to the fields”, he stated.
