Adopt Hong Kong model for waste disposal in Goa: Rane

Underscoring the seriousness of the garbage menace in the state, senior Congress leader and Poriem MLA Pratapsingh Rane on Tuesday urged the government to adopt the Hong Kong model of waste disposal for the state.
“In Hong Kong, they have modern garbage disposal plants, where the garbage is burnt in a scientific manner… they generate electricity from the heat that emanates. Our government should study the particular technology and adopt the same model to set up at least one such plant each for both the district in the state,” Rane said while interacting with media persons at the state assembly complex in Porvorim.
He said that in Hong Kong there are certain equipment in the waste treatment plants that magnetically separates the iron and tin materials from the waste.
“You cannot dump garbage at certain sites like Sonsoddo and claim that the garbage issue has been resolved. If we want
to make Goa an attraction for tourism then we have to provide tourists a clean and safe environment, and this is possible only by clearing the garbage from the roadside,” the senior Congress legislator said.
Rane also stressed on the need for the government to come out with regulations and measures to change the mindset of the people, adding that people cannot drink water and throw the bottles on roads.
Earlier in the day, Opposition leader Chandrakant Kavlekar chaired a meeting of the Congress legislature party.
Addressing a press conference after the meeting, he demanded that the government should spell out its stand on GoaMiles, an app-based taxi service facilitator in the state, and the draft coastal zone management plan.
He accused ministers and the ruling MLAs of not giving an opportunity to the Congress MLAs to raise their concerns on the draft CZMP during the presentation that was recently held in the assembly complex for the legislators.
