Guilty in Ongole gang-rape case will be punished: Sucharita

Home Minister M. Sucharita has directed the SP, Prakasam, to speed up the investigation into the incident in which a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped in Ongole.
Addressing the media here on Sunday, Ms. Sucharita condemned the incident, and said stringent punishment would be given to the guilty. She also said a separate women protection wing would be constituted to probe such atrocities.

Staff Reporter in Vijayawada writes: Meanwhile, DGP D. Gautam Sawang said the perpetrators of crime against women and children would be dealt with severely.
Reacting to the gang-rape in Ongole, Mr. Sawang, while condemning the incident, said in a statement that the safety and security of women and children were being accorded utmost priority, and the perpetrators would be brought to book.
Mr. Sawang appealed to the youth, particularly girls, to be extremely cautious while travelling and moving around public places. “Pass on any information about crime against women and children to the police,” he appealed, and said the Ongole incident came to light only after a public-spirited person tipped off the police.
