Pranab Mukherjee's Son Abhijeet Trails to TMC as BJP Powers Through With 15 Seats

The Congress -- which through initial rounds of counting had managed to hold on to 2 seats -- is down to just 1 at Bahrampur, where its heavy weight and former state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is still in the lead. Jangipur candidate Abhijeet Mukherjee, the son of former President Pranab Mukherjee, is trailing with the TMC leading in the seat.

With a lead in 15 seats, the BJP appears to have cracked the Bengal code that has so far evaded it. The state, which in many ways is the birthplace of Hindutva and from where its founder Shyama Prasad Mookherjee represented in the Parliament, has undoubtedly chosen the BJP as the prime opposition for the Trinamool Congress. The TMC’s votes have been reduced from 34 in 2014 to leads at just 25 seats. The Left’s seeming decimation appears to confirm the Trinamool Congress’s worst fears -- that the traditional Left voter shifted to vote for the BJP in a bid to foil the Mamata Banejree bandwagon in the state.
