Meghalaya govt warns educational institutes over school bags’ weight

In pursuance to the guidelines of union ministry of human resource development on the weight of school bags and health of children, Meghalaya government has again warned all schools that did not comply with the government guidelines.
In a statement issued on Friday, the education department reminded schools about an earlier notification which instructed schools not to assign homework to students except those recommended by MBOSE/ICSE/CBSE.
Schools shall not assign homework to students of Classes I and II. The notification says the weight of school bags should not exceed 1.5kg for classes I and II, 2-3kg for classes III to V, 4kg for classes VI and VII, 4.5kg for classes VIII and IX and 5kg for students of Class X.
Students should not be forced to bring additional books and other materials apart from the prescribed textbooks. Schools should make sure that students carry only such textbooks as indicated in the time-table.
The head of schools and teachers should frame well-designed time table for each class so that children do not have to carry too many books or notebooks to the school each day.
