North East Human Rights Organization of Arunachal Pradesh resents child labour in State

The Arunachal Pradesh unit of the North East Human Rights Organization (NEHRO) has appealed to the State government to impose a blanket ban on child labour, which it said is prevalent despite a ban. In a representation to the Chief Secretary, the NEHRO urged him to issue an order directing all concerned to stop child labour. The organization lamented that despite the ban on it, child labour is still rampant in the State. “Child labour in Arunachal is found mainly in the form of domestic help, hotel boys, and unskilled workers at garages and other commercial establishments,” it said. The organization lamented that these children are not only being exploited as cheap labourer but also subjected to physical abuse, threat and intimidation.
As per the law, the NEHRO said, employing children below 14 years of age in any form of work that can jeopardize the education and development of a child is an offence. The NEHRO also urged the State government to ensure education of every child aged between 6 and 14 years of age, as mandated in the RTE Act.
