Tripura police arrest freelance journalist for fake news campaign against CM

Tripura Police on April 28 arrested Saikat Talapatra, a freelance journalist, for his connection to a fake news campaign suggesting that Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb was undergoing a divorce.
Talapatra was taken to the West Agartala Police Station after links were found between him and Anupam Paul, who had earlier been booked for forgery and criminal conspiracy in the case,  reported.
"We have arrested Saikat Talapatra for involvement in a case of defaming the Chief Minister. He is currently being interrogated and would be produced before a local court tomorrow," Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Suburata Chakraborty told the paper.
Talapatra worked as a journalist in many organisations till 2018, after which he worked as a freelancer. He last worked on a special interview on Hallabol, a local cable TV channel.
A senior journalist likened the arrest to an "Emergency-like situation" in Tripura, adding that anyone criticising the incumbent BJP-IPFT government is "being put behind bars".
