Polling for a single parliamentary constituency in the northeastern state of Mizoram is being held on April 11 under Phase 1 of the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Like most other northeastern states, Mizoram has vehemently protested against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
While the Bill could not be passed in the Rajya Sabha, Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah promised to re-introduce the Bill if the BJP returned to power. The promise has raised concerns among those who are protesting against the Bill.
From students to citizens, many have joined protests against the Bill and have been seen carrying placards that read: "Hello China, Bye Bye India" and "Welcome Independent Republic of Mizoram".
It seems that the issue of Citizenship Bill has grabbed all the limelight ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in Mizoram, leaving issues such as liquor prohibition, which helped the Mizo National Front, headed by Zoramthanga, come to power in the state, on the backburner.
