Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh LS polls: Congress needs a phoenix act as BJP remains formidable in hills

The polling in the hill states of Himachal Pradesh (HP) and Uttarakhand will be held in a single phase. Himachal Pradesh’s 51, 54, 854 registered electors will cast their votes on May 19 – the seventh and last phase of the elections across its four parliamentary constituencies. The voting in Uttarakhand will be done in its five LS seats on April 11 – the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019.
Riding on the Modi wave in 2014, the BJP wrested all 5 seats from Congress in Uttarakhand, overturning its stellar performance in 2009 of 5-0.
For the forthcoming elections, the BJP has yet again fielded its incumbent candidates from Tehri Garhwal, Almora and Hardwar from the same seats. BJP sitting MP Mala Rajya Laxmi is pitted against Congress’ Pritam Singh in Tehri Garhwal; Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat is pitted against veteran BJP leader BC Khanduri’s son Manish Khanduri in Almora seat; in Nainital-Udhamsingh Nagar BJP state unit president Ajay Bhatt will battle it out with former chief minister and AICC general secretary Harish Rawat; senior leader Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and sitting BJP MP from Hardwar is in the fray against Congress leader Ambrish Kumar.
