Mallya: A new trump card for filthy politicians

Author: Kriti dheer

Vijay Mallya who was once called the “King of Good Times”  has become the target of biggest controversy nowadays. Although he flew away two years back, a statement given by him in Westminster had become the burning issue in India. All the parties are hitting hard on each other’s roots/hammering one another for the big loss of Rs. 9,000 Cr. to the country. But is it the biggest debt to be paid by any Indian business tycoon? if you think so, then you are living in a big misconception throughout the time. Well known groups like Reliance, Vedanta, Videocon, Adani, LANCO, J.P. and four more groups collectively had to pay a debt of more than 7 lakh crore rupees at the time when Mallya left the country. Even Citing Bloomberg’s data(in March 2018), new agency IANS has put the Adani Group's total debt at Rs99,181.09 crores whereas the total estimated fortune of Adani group was $14 billion i.e. Rs.84,000 crores. Here the question arises is that; how these companies manage to get such a huge amount even if their assets are lesser than the company’s total asset?  Does anyone care about it really? Or are higher authorities waiting for another Vijay Mallya or Nirav Modi to hamper our economic system?

Does the opposition really care about India?

No doubt under all the consecutive government's such scams and monetary losses have taken place but it is hilarious to see that these are criticised only when the parties are in opposition. And when the same party comes back as the ruling powers they just forget their stands and creates space for corruption. Be it Commonwealth games scam worth Rs.90,000 crore, 2G spectrum scam worth ₹1,76, 645 crores or the upcoming Rahul Gandhi Tax scandal worth Rs. 2,000 crores; in which he has denied to pay the government taxes, but they never skip a chance to point out the mistakes of the ruling party. The ironical factor over here is that the Congress ministers or party members who themselves are involved in so many scams are launching scathing attacks on Arun Jaitley and Narendra Modi over the Vijay Mallya’s fraud case. They have swiped the slogan “sabka sath, sabka vikas” with “ bhagodo ke sath, lootero ka vikas” but do they really have investigated and worked on the monetary losses the country had faced during their governance?  Or even the Congress’ president is not doing his mere duty of being a sincere citizen i.e. by responding to the notice by the Income Tax department to him.

Modi deflating his 56 inches chest

Throughout 70 years of governance, BJP has been criticizing Congress for its ignorance in different fields but now when the approach is in BJP’s hands the accountability of the party towards public increases. But Modi's narrative has been affected by complaints of unemployment, farm distress, and a fragmented opposition coming together, many have expected Modi to take recourse to Hindutva and an aggressive nationalism. Modi himself is flouting what people expect him to do. Moreover keeping mum for such a long period also raises questions in the minds of the general public. Still, they are found trying to deflect the attention to the past instead of discussing his own achievements. Similar to the party has done in the case of Vijay Mallia’s statement given in Westminster. The way BJP government have reacted to the question raised by the opposition is quite disappointing. On the opposition’s accusation that BJP has helped Mallaya to flew away from the country BJP had reverted in a quite immature manner. Instead of resolving the issue they fired back on Congress with allegations on Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.

Conclusion:

To the conclusion, the biggest drawback of Indian political diaspora is the absence of morality and the very sense of nationalism. All the parties are taking the statement of Vijay Mallya as a new gem for their filthy politics. They are hammering each other by touching the different aspects of the issue and twisting it in a favourable manner for themselves. They are more into targeting each other's loopholes instead of working into the issue.
