Bharat Bandh to a Blame Game!
Author: Thamanna Abdul Latheef
Bharat Bandh, road and rail roko aren't new to Indians. The country has come to a standstill as the opposition parties have called for a nationwide protest over the fuel price hike. No doubt, all the consecutive governments hiked fuel prices in our country and every time it happens, we do see protests by opposition parties. It is too ironic to watch politicians make serious comments on the ruling government for the upsurge in the fuel price but at the same time, these politicians change their stand when they rule the country.
The protests become problematic when the normal life is being affected by the goons of various political parties. It becomes dreadful when the public properties are being vandalized as it turns violent in no time. A major incident to be quoted right here is the loss of a 2-year-old-girl’s life in Bihar as the ambulance taking to the hospital was stranded amidst the traffic jam followed by the protest. This was a prime example of a case where a life could have been saved if this much hassle wasn’t created. A major point to be noted here is that: instead of delving deep into the magnitude of the issue, the BJP has taken this issue as a trump card to attack the Congress for organizing a bandh nationwide.
A protest in a democracy is acceptable since we all have the equal right to dissent or to disagree with the government, who is in power. Instead of resolving the issue, both the parties are taking it as a brownie point for each other to win the upcoming general assembly elections. On one hand, Rahul Gandhi along with many other leaders from the opposition are slamming the central government for rupee fall and fuel price hike and on the other hand, Modi led NDA government is attacking the opposition parties and glorifying whatever they have promised or said to have done. The BJP is also not brazen to blame the previous UPA government for the current scenario.
This is where exactly the menace arises: a point has come where no political party or no political leader takes up the responsibility. Due to the very same reason, no sense of accountability is left and our politicians are way too brazen!
